I recently had a soul-stirring conversation with a dear friend — a fellow mother who, like me, had just left a traumatic, manipulative marriage.

Our connection ran deep, grounded in mutual understanding and shared experience. As we spoke, I realised how far I’ve come — and how the wisdom I’ve gained now supports others on their journey. Unintentionally, my story had helped give her the courage to step away from the toxicity she was enduring and choose herself — not just for her own well-being, but for her children too.

This is why I share what I do.
To hold space.
To offer hope.
To remind conscious mothers that there is a path forward — one filled with safety, self-trust, and sanctuary.

As we spoke about life in survival mode, we reflected on a quiet truth:
You don’t always realise how unsafe you’ve felt… until you finally begin to feel safe.

This post is for her.
For me.
And for every mother navigating the sacred, silent aftermath of leaving what no longer serves you — and learning to come home to yourself.

Let me share our hard-earned wisdom, so that you, too, know you are seen, held, and never alone.

The Unspoken Truth About Survival Mode

When you’re in it, you don’t know you’re in it.
You’re just doing what needs to be done.
For the kids.
To keep the peace.
To get through the day.

But survival mode doesn’t allow for growth.
It doesn’t make space for you.

And worst of all — it teaches your nervous system that it’s never safe to:

  • Slow down
  • Express yourself
  • Make mistakes
  • Receive support
  • Ask for more

It All Comes Down to Safety

Through our conversation, we came back to one truth again and again:

All healing begins with safety.
And all limiting beliefs, emotional triggers, and survival-based patterns come down to not feeling safe.

To truly move from surviving to thriving, you must feel safe to:
Express your emotions fully without fear of judgement or escalation
Parent in a way that honours your values and intuition
Prioritise your needs unapologetically
Speak your truth — even if your voice shakes
Fail forward and grow at your own pace
Surround yourself with people who see you, hear you, and support your growth

A Sanctuary Loves You Unconditionally

Here’s the deeper truth that we often miss:

Fear is love, crying out for safety.
When we feel anxious, triggered, or reactive — we’re not broken.
We’re simply responding to a world (or a home) that hasn’t felt safe.

In an abusive or manipulative environment, love often feels conditional:

  • “You’re loved if you behave a certain way.”
  • “You’re safe as long as you don’t speak up.”
  • “You’re enough when you meet someone else’s expectations.”

That kind of love teaches us to shrink, suppress, and self-abandon.

But a true sanctuary — both physically and within your soul — offers something radically different.

It says:

“You’re safe here. All of you. Even the scared parts. Especially the scared parts.”

It embraces your vulnerability with compassion.
It sees your fears, your imperfections, and your messy moments — and meets them with gentleness, not judgement.

It’s the Healthy Adult within, wrapping her arms around the Inner Child and whispering:

“You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be real. And I’ve got you now.”

This is the foundation that allows healing to begin.
And this is what I mean when I talk about creating a sanctuary — in your space, and in your Self.

Your Sanctuary Is More Than a Place — It’s a Pathway

When my marriage ended, I didn’t just rebuild a home.
I created a sanctuary.

At first, it was one room.
Then a feeling.
Then a way of living.

Your sanctuary doesn’t judge you.
It gently holds you where you are.
And when you’re ready, it guides you back home to you.

And through your courageous transformation, the once-wounded child within you naturally begins to nurture the children you’re raising — creating a safe haven where they, too, can grow into their perfectly imperfect, authentic selves.

This is the essence of my work — and the path I walk alongside other mothers.
